Tips for July

Lawn Care

  • Turf diseases are everywhere!  The stress from the heat in combination with the uncomfortable humidity have made foliar diseases run rampant.   We have a great granular product that takes care of any and all turf fungi.  The most common form is red thread, which will cause an overall yellowing of the yard.  This looks like small pieces of red sewing threads that hide in the thatch of your lawn.  This cannot be noticed at a distance, a close examination is necessary to recognize this pest.  Whether you have a hungry lawn, sick lawn or lush lawn, now is the time to feed it .  We have a great line of organic fertilizers to do the job as well as the popular Greenview  product line most are familiar with.  If you are on the Greenview  program, now is the time to put down the 2way weed & feed.  It needs to be put down on a damp lawn with two days of no rain in the forecast after the application.  To prevent the damaging insect infestations in your lawn like grubs or chinch bugs, apply long term pesticides such as Bayer Season Long.  To control immediate infestations of these insects or other nuisance insects like fleas and ticks,  apply quick kill Bayer 24 Hour  or Bayer Insect Killer, which is available in both liquid and granular.  Spring has passed, but that does not mean that lawn weeds gone. The warmer climate has triggered a new group of grassy and broadleaf weeds to germinate.  Whatever problems you have had in the past, or seem to be having now, we have your solution.  Stop in whenever you can, with a sample of the problem at hand and we will solve all your lawn troubles.

For Your Vegetable Garden

  • Apply a weekly fertilizer to give vegetable plants a healthy start and keep them producing all summer long.
  • It is not too late for veggies! For those who are getting a late start, consider a container garden of cooking herbs and tomatoes. Remember, you can never have enough fresh basil.

For Your Flower Beds

  • Keep feeding those roses with rose food. Want a break? Consider some hardy new varieties of low maintenance bloomers. Try the new 'Knockout' roses. They are now available in a range of colors.
  • Deadhead annual and perennial flowers to encourage repeat bloom. Discard spent flowers to avoid spreading disease.
  • Have some bare spots in your borders? Visit the garden center for larger 'patio' pots of summer annuals. It is an instant fix that will keep your border blooming all summer long.
  • Not interested in keeping up with the weeds? Can't keep up with the watering? Apply a layer of mulch to beds to control weeds and conserve moisture.
  • Today's new varieties of super annuals require additional fertilizer treatments. Give plants a weekly feeding of liquid fertilizer to keep them performing all summer long.

For Your Trees and Shrubs

  • Make sure to keep those newly planted trees and shrubs watered well. Try to provide at least an inch of water, whether through the rain or sprinklers in order to protect your investment. Just discovering shrubs with winter kill? Stop by the nursery for some instant color. We've still got a great selection of flowering shrubs, evergreens and trees.
