Beat the Heat & Keep your Plants Thriving this July!☀️

HEAT WARNING!

With temperatures above 90°F for the next few days, a little extra care now will help your plants weather the heat.

The most important thing you can do is water the soil—not the leaves. Water slowly and deeply at the base of the plant so moisture reaches the roots where it’s needed most. Morning is the best time to water.

Remember, the sun isn’t any stronger during a heat wave, it’s the high temperatures that stress plants. Most sun-loving plants are adapted to full sun. Rather than covering them, focus on keeping the soil evenly moist. Avoid laying fabric or blankets directly over plants, as they can trap heat and reduce airflow.

New plants: If you've already purchased trees, shrubs, or perennials, go ahead and plant them! A well-watered plant in the ground stays cooler and holds moisture much better than one left in a nursery pot. Water the soil deeply at planting, add a layer of mulch, and check the soil daily.

Established plants: Water deeply at the soil level once or twice during the heat wave rather than giving frequent light watering. Some afternoon wilting is normal, but if plants are still wilted the next morning, they need water.

Containers & hanging baskets: These dry out very quickly and may need watering once, twice or even three times a day. Make sure that until runoff appears at the bottom to ensure the entire pot is saturated.

Skip the sprays: Do not apply neem oil, insecticides, fungicides, or deer repellents during the hottest part of the day. Apply only in the early morning or evening, and always follow the label directions.

Take care of yourself, too! Garden during the cooler morning or evening hours, drink plenty of water, wear a hat, and take breaks in the shade.
