The confusing part is that it looks like a disease. It isn't. And the usual advice — "your soil needs calcium" — is often only half the story, especially in a summer like this one.
What Blossom End Rot Actually Is
Blossom end rot shows up as a flat, water-soaked spot on the bottom of the fruit — opposite the stem — that darkens and toughens as it grows. It can affect tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and squash. It's not caused by a fungus, bacteria, or insect, so there's nothing to spray to kill it. It's a physiological response to a localized calcium shortage inside the fruit itself.
That's the part most people get stuck on: the plant can have plenty of calcium in the soil and still develop blossom end rot. The problem usually isn't supply. It's delivery.
The Real Cause: It's a Water Problem, Not a Soil Problem
Calcium doesn't move through a plant on its own — it travels dissolved in water, pulled up through the roots and out to wherever the plant is losing the most moisture, which is almost always the leaves. Fruit doesn't lose water the way leaves do, so it's last in line. When water uptake is steady, that's rarely a problem. When it isn't, the fruit is the first place to fall short.

- Water on a consistent schedule, ideally deeply, 2–3 times a week rather than a little every day — consistency matters more than volume.
- Mulch around the base with straw, shredded bark, or compost to buffer soil moisture swings between rain and dry spells.
- Go easy on nitrogen-heavy fertilizer once fruit sets — it pushes leafy growth that competes with fruit for calcium and water.
- Avoid disturbing roots when weeding or staking nearby — root damage interrupts the same water pathway calcium relies on.
- Choose lower-maintenance, less rot-prone varieties next season if it's a recurring issue in a particular bed.
What Doesn't Help (Despite What You've Heard)
A few well-meaning tricks don't hold up once you understand what's actually happening:
- Eggshells or Tums tossed in the planting hole — most soils already have enough calcium; the shortage is almost always about water movement, not raw supply.
- Adding more calcium fertilizer mid-season — unless a soil test specifically shows a calcium deficiency, more calcium in the ground won't fix a delivery problem.
What to Do With Affected Fruit
Fruit that already has blossom end rot won't heal, but the rest of the tomato is still perfectly good to eat — just cut around the spot. The encouraging part: it's common early in the season on the first fruit clusters and often clears up on its own as watering evens out and the plant matures.

Is blossom end rot contagious to other plants?
