A helpful native perennial pollinator—now available for pre-order in 1-gallon size.
Meet the final perennial in our pollinator collection—Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa). This bold, blazing orange native is the perfect choice for hot, dry, sunny spots where other plants struggle. Grown specifically for our customers, this is a no-fuss, no-irrigation solution that delivers vibrant color and essential pollinator support.
Unlike the swamp milkweeds we’ve offered previously, Butterfly Weed doesn’t want moisture or rich soil. It thrives in tough, sandy, well-draining soil—think curbside mailboxes, driveway edges, or those forgotten patches of full sun where hoses don’t reach.
Native to the Northeast (including Connecticut), you’ve likely seen this growing wild at the beach—along sand dunes and coastal roadsides from Cape Cod to the East End of Long Island. It’s an essential part of our native ecosystem and a beacon for butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds.

Why You’ll Love It:
-
Built for Tough Spots: Thrives in hot, dry, sunny areas without irrigation
-
Pollinator Favorite: Nectar magnet for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds
-
Bold Blooms: Electric orange flowers from early to mid-summer
-
Low Maintenance: No watering, no pampering—just plant and enjoy
-
Northeast Native: Naturally found in sandy, coastal soils throughout New England
How to Make It Happy:
-
Sun: Full sun (6+ hours daily)
-
Soil: Well-draining; prefers sandy, low-organic soils
-
Water: Do not irrigate once established—this plant wants dry conditions
-
Height & Spread: 1.5–2 ft tall; 1.5–2 ft wide
- Hardiness: Perennial in zones 3–9
Ecological Notes:
Butterfly Weed provides abundant nectar and pollen to adult butterflies and hummingbirds, but it’s less favored as a food source for monarch caterpillars compared to swamp milkweed. That said, it’s still a valuable native plant and a key part of a pollinator-friendly garden.
Pet Safety:
This plant is considered toxic if ingested by pets. While not typically appealing to animals, plant with awareness if you have curious nibblers.
