Quick Planting Guide
- When: Plant in late autumn after the first frost, but before the ground freezes.
- How: Plant cloves pointed-end up, 2" deep and 6" apart in full sun. Cover with 3–4 inches of straw mulch for the winter,
- Care: Feed with a nitrogen based fertilizer when plants emerge in the spring. Keep the patch weeded. Irrigate with about 1" of water per week (either from Mother Nature or your hose), taper off right before harvest.
- Remove the Scapes for larger bulbs: Scapes are the tall shoots with a slim bud that emerges out of the leaves. Once the scape starts to curl just snap it off with your thumb and 1st finger. Enjoy these delecasies with dinner!
- Harvest: In the mid-summer when about 50% of the plant has died back and started to yellow
- Curing: Hang or spread them in a shady, breezy spot for 3 weeks until the leaves and central stalks are completely brown, dry, and brittle.
